Serbia: Medal for Zealous Service, gold (gilt) class
(1st Class), for Officers of the Combat Units.
Large type, 34mm.
The medal was established in 1913 to reward
zealous services to the Serbian Armed Forces
during the 2 Balkan Wars (1912 - 1913) that had
just been ended.
It was awarded to both civilian and military
personnel.
Designed by the sculptor Dorđe Jovanovic (1861-
1953) the medal was initially produced by Arthus
Bertrand (Paris, France) and Huguenin Freres (Le
Locle, Switzerland) and later in Yugoslavia by Fran
Sorlini, Griesbach & Knaus and Kovnica PLC and
in Austria.
It remained in use during throughout and after
WW1.
This is the rare, larger (33mm diameter) post WW1
example, by Huguenin Freres (Le Locle,
Switzerland) - although unmarked it is recognized
by the ball suspender with "neck".
