SPAIN: Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise, Knight's
Cross (4th Class).
The Order was established on April 11, 1939 by
decree of General Francisco Franco, in 5 Classes
(4 Crosses, 1 Medal) .
The Order to replace the Civil Order of Alfonso
XII and it is awarded to both Spanish and Foreign
citizens for distinguished achievement in the
fields of education, science and culture.
Alfonso X (1221- 1284), King of Castile, Leon and
Galicia actively encouraged the studies of the
Ancient Greek, Byzantine and Arab sources of
knowledge especially in the fields of History,
Mathematics, Philosophy, Astronomy and
Medicine.
During his reign a large amount of books were
translated from Greek, Arabic and Hebrew into
Latin and Castilian.
This is a post WW2 example, most likely of the
1950s - 1960s.
The Order is scarce in all its classes.
