Austrian Empire (Holy Roman Empire):
Silver Commemorative and Merit Medal for
the Defense of Tirol, in 1797 against the
French.
The medal was instituted by Kaiser Franz II,
in July 1797, in 3 types:
- Large Gold Medal (issued to Army Corps
Commanders)
- Gold Medal (for Officers)
- Silver Medal (for NCOs and other ranks).
It was issued to the Tiroleans who took up
arms in support of the Austrian Army and
who displayed exceptional bravery or merit
in defending the Tirol Province against the
French troops of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Obverse: The portrait of Kaiser Franz II with
the inscription:
"FRANZ.II. R. K. ERZH. ZU. OEST. GEF. GRAF.
VON. TYROL."

Prince, Count of Tirol)
Reverse: The inscription "DEN TAPFEREN
VERTHEIDIGERN DES VATERLANDES
MDCCXCVII (To the Brave Defenders of the
Fatherland 1797).
Signed I.N. Wirt F (for the medalist Johann
Nepomuk Wirt - the "F" stands for "Fabrikant"
- maker).
