Austro–Hungarian Empire: Commemorative
Medal for the Annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina
by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Signed by Richard Placht.
On the obverse: The portrait of Kaiser Franz
Joseph encircled in Latin by the inscription: Franz
Joseph I, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Austria,
King of Bohemia etc., Apostolic King of Hungary.
On the reverse: The date of the annexation of BiH
and the Coat of Arms of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
With the inscription (Latin): In Commemoration.
The medal was established in 1909 and was
awarded to the members of the Armed Forces
and the State mechanism that were serving in
Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) on the date of the
Annexation of the Province (5 Oct. 1908). BiH, at
the time, was already under Austro–Hungarian
occupation and administration since the end of
the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 (according
to the provisions of the Congress of Berlin).
The medal is rare as only 3000 were produced
and only 2800 of them were actually issued.
