The medal was established in 1916 as the
Austrian equivalent to the German Iron Cross.
It was awarded without Crown to soldiers and
NCOs (as this example) and with Crown to
Officers.
Early issue, iron made (zinc was used to
produce the later examples as iron was
reserved for the war needs).260
