Austro-Hungarian Empire: Order of Elizabeth,
Silver Medal for Merit.
Obverse: A Cross with equal arms stylized with
lily blossoms.
In the center, the bust of St Elisabeth of Hungary.
Reverse: The Imperial Monogram of Kaiserin
Elisabeth formed in rose branches & surrounded
with rose flowers.
The Order, named after St Elisabeth of Hungary,
was instituted in 1898 to honor and commemorate
Kaizer Franz Joseph's late wife, Kaizerin Elisabeth,
who had been assassinated on Sep. 10 of the same
year.
The award was intended exclusively for female
recipients, regardless of social status or religion,
for merits in religious, philanthropic and/or
charitable work.
The Order was disbanded in 1918 following the
end of WW1 and the collapse of the Monarchy.
Only 208 Elisabeth Medals for Merit were ever
awarded (163 domestic awards and 45 to
foreigners) consequently the medal is scarce.
