Austro–Hungarian Empire: Imperial Order of
the Iron Crown, Knight of 3rd Class, with War
Decoration. On ribbon with crossed swords.
The Order was initially instituted in 1805, by
Napoleon Bonaparte on the occasion of his
coronation with the Crown of Lombardy as
King Napoleon I of Italy. After the fall of the
Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, the province of
Lombardy was restored to Austrian rule and
the Order was re-established, in 1815, by
Franz I - Emperor of Austria, as the Austrian
Imperial Order of the Iron Crown - one of the
highest orders of merit of Austria and Austria-
Hungary until 1918. All its 3 classes conferred
automatic hereditary ennoblement (as Knight,
Baron and Privy Councillor respectively).
The Order was abolished in 1918.
Bronze gilt example, marked with the star mark.
A late type of the Order (WW1 period) issued
to a combatant, for war time meritorious
service.
