AUSTRIA - 1st Austrian Republic: Badge of the 
Republican Defense Association of the Social 
Democratic Workers' Party of Austria (SDAP). 
The party emerged in 1889, After the end of WW1 
and the fall of Monarchy the SDAP participated 
with moderate success in the 1920 elections of 
the 1st Austrian Republic. 
Both under the Austro-fascist dictatorship (1934– 
1938) and during the German occupation of 
Austria between 1938 and 1945, the SDAP was 
banned and persecuted heavily. 
The Republican Protection Association was a 
paramilitary organization of the SDAP (instituted 
in 1923) which participated in the Austrian Civil 
war of 1934. 
The war ended with the Victory of the Austrian 
Fascists and of the Federal Army of Chancellor 
Dolfuss, while the main leaders of the SDAP 
were executed.
