BELGIUM: Commemorative Military Medal for the
participation in the Operations during the Korean
War, under the UN mandate.
With 2 bars: "Korea" in French and Flemish and
"Chatkol".
The Chatkol bar has been awarded to the aprox.
700 men of the Belgian UN Contingent under the
Command of Lt. Colonel R. Gathy who during the
period of 26 Feb. to 21 Apr. 1953 held a defensive
position near the Chatkol village in the "Iron
Triangle" despite of over 55 consecutive Chinese
night assaults.

The medal was established in 1951 and the design
of its reverse side was later used as well for the
UN respective Commemorative Medal which was
issued to the members of the Belgian Contingent.
A rare decoration (less than 3.500 medals were
awarded in total) with an even rarer bar.
