BELGIUM: WW1 Cross of the Deportees.
In its box of issue by Fonson (the stamp of the
Fonson firm is missing but the visible circular
stain in the interior of the lid is a give away,
together of course with the box itself).
The medal was instituted in 1922 and was
awarded to the military and civilian personnel
that were deported to Germany as defaulters
and were subjected to force labor during
WW1.
It is estimated that about 50.000 Belgians
were deported to Germany during the period
that the policy for deportation remained in
effect (Oct. 1916 - Feb. 1917).
