Belgium: Miniature of the WW1 Commemo-
rative medal for participation in the defense
of Liege during the battle & siege of the city.
The medal was issued by the City of Liege,
in 1920, to those who had defended Liege
against the German forces in 1914 ( 5 -16
Aug. 1914).
The city garrison of 70.000 Belgians and 12
forts managed to repulse the initial attacks
of the German 2nd Army (General Ludendorff,
320.000 men) but the city in the end fell to the
German hands.
