Belgium: WW1 Commemorative Cross for the
1914 battle of Yser, where the Belgian Army
managed to stop the German advance, losing
in the effort the 1/3 of its total strength.
Signed by Emile Vloors.
The Yser Cross was instituted in 1934 to replace
the Yser medal, that had been initially awarded
to the participants of the battle.
However, since it had to be purchased by the
recipients (and partially because 20 years had
been passed already since the battle) only a
few veterans actually decided to buy it.
Consequently this is a rare medal.
