BELGIUM: Miniature of the Cross of the Royal
Federation of the Veterans of King Leopold III.
King Leopold III was the supreme commander
of the Belgian Armed forces during the
German invasion in 1940.
His decision to surrender the Belgian forces
to the Germans, (exposing thus the allied
flank) was heavily criticized.
After the surrender, King Leopold remained
in Brussels, while his entire government fled
to Paris and later to London.
Leopold III rejected cooperation with the
Nazis and he was deported to Germany. His
return to the throne, following the liberation
of Belgium, almost started a civil war and
Leopold III decided to abdicate in favor of
his son Prince Baudouin, in 1951.
