Belgium: Gold (gilt) Palms (1st Class) in the
Order of the Belgian Crown.
This example is of rather recent manufacture
(1990s).
In its cardbox of issue, marked by P. Degreef.
The Order was instituted in 1897 as an award
for meritorious services at the Belgian Congo.
In 1908 the Order became officially a Belgian
Order, awarded for meritorious civil or military
services to the Belgian state, and could be
awarded to both Belgian and foreign citizens.
The Order of the Crown has 5 classes, 2 palms
(gilt and silver) and 3 medals (gilt, silver and
bronze).
The Palms and Medals are awarded to lower-
ranking military and civilian personnel for
meritorious service and in contrary to the
French Academic Palms they are not
academic awards.
