Belgium: Belgian Royal Household Medal for the
Delegations of the Foreign Countries at the Royal
Court, 2nd class, King Leopold III, since 1934.
Singed by E. Dufossez.
The Royal Household medal was established in
1889 by King Leopold II, in 3 types.
King Leopold III amended the Royal Household
medal in 1934 by establishing 2 different types
(for the Employees of the Royal Court and
for the Foreign Delegations at the Royal Court
respectively), in 3 classes and 1 Special Medal
in 2 Classes.
The Royal Household medal of King Leopold III
is extremely scarce, due to the fact that it was
actually awarded for just 6 years (1934-1940) as
King Leopold III was kept in German captivity
following the surrender of the Belgian Army to
the Germans and fled to Switzerland after his
liberation by the US Army in 1945, where he
remained until 1950.
Upon his return to Belgium, he was forced to
abdicate in favor of his son Baudouin, in Aug.
1950.
