Belgium: WW2 Commemorative Medal, 1940-
1945, with Crossed Swords for Combatants
of the 1940 defensive campaign and clasp
"Winterbeek".
The clasp was awarded to the members of the
Piron Brigade who took part (attached to
British XXX Corps) in Operation Market
Garden, the unsuccesful allied attempt to
establish a bridgehead over the River Rhine,
creating thus an invasion route into northern
Germany (17-25 Sep. 1944).
The area of Winterbeek (a stream near
Leopoldsburg) hosted the headquarters in
advance of Operation Market Garden.
On the obverse: The Belgian Lion between
the arms of a "V" (for Victory).
On the reverse: "Commemorative Medal of
the War 1940-1945", in French and Flemish.
The medal was established in 1946.
