The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael
and Saint George was founded in 1818 by King
George IV (Prince Regent at the time).
Appointment to the Order is granted to men
and women (since 1965) who hold high office
or who render extraordinary or important non-
military service in a foreign country, and can
also be conferred for important or loyal service
in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs.
The Order is the sixth-most senior in the British
honors system.
