GREAT BRITAIN: Silver WW2 "King's Medal for
Courage in the Cause of Freedom" - King George
VI issue.
In its box of issue by the Royal Mint.
With the respective ribbon bar (privately made).
Signed P.M. on the obverse and W.G. on the
reverse.
The medal was established in 1945 and had been
awarded for acts of courage by non British,
civilians and ex military personnel (usually
members of the Resistance groups) towards the
Allied cause.
It was primarily intended to reward those who at
risk of their own lives had assisted British and
Commonwealth escapees in enemy occupied
territory (such as the evacuation of the British
personnel in Dunkirk & after the battle of Crete).
Only 3200 such medals were ever awarded -
extremely scarce.
