Central African Republic: Knight's Star in the
Order of Central African Merit.
The Order was established in 1959, in 5
classes. It is the highest award of the Central
African Republic and is being awarded to
Central African citizens (and under special
circumstances also to foreigners) for
exceptional merit in the humanitarian,
economic and social spheres. The awards
were produced in France by Arthus Bertrand
(and in some cases by Chobillon).
The maximum number of appointed Knights
is capped at 150, hence this is a scarce
award.
The Central African Republic gained its
independence from France in 1960 (former
French Colony of Ubangi-Shari (until 1958)
and later French Autonomous Territory
(1958-1960)).
