Republic of Chad: Cross of Military Merit.
The Cross was established in 1966. It is awarded
to military personnel for exceptional actions or
acts of bravery during military operations in the
context of an armed conflict or in peace keeping
operations.
The Cross is scarce as it was mainly bestowed to
French casualties (aprox. 150 dead and injured)
who took part in the Operation Limousin
(1969-1971)against the National Liberation Front
of Chad that was waging guerrilla warfare and
threatening the capital N'Djamena.
The operation was the largest anti-insurgency
operation since the Algerian war, but also the
first external operation of the French army in
Africa.
