Congo (Zaire): National Order of the Leopard,
Knight's Star with Swords (Military Division).
Obverse: A leopard circumscribed with the
national motto "Justice, Paix, Travail" (Justice,
Peace, Work)
Reverse: The inscription "Republique
Democratique de Congo (Democratic Republic
of Congo).
The Order was instituted in 1966, in 5 classes,
to be awarded to Congolese and foreign
citizens for outstanding merit and service to
the state. It could be awarded to both military
and civilians and it the highest Order of
Congo. The Order was amended in 1971 (the
blue color of the order changed to green) as
Congo changed its name to Zaire and was
amended again to this form in 1991 when
Zaire was renamed DR Congo.
This is an early example of the 1966-1971 era,
with ribbon of the Zaire era (a common
practice).
The Order is rarely seen in the market in
every class.
