The Medal was created in 1941, by the Axis Puppet,
the Independent Croatian State (Ustasa of Ante
Pavelic).
It was awarded for deeds of personal bravery in the
face of the enemy to Croatians and to members of
the Axis Armed Forces, mainly Germans. There
were 4 grades (Golden, Large and Small Silver,
and Bronze).
The Small Silver Medal was almost exclusively
awarded to the families of fallen Officers.
Maker marked NDH (Croatian State Mint) and
stamped with the "Rooster" hallmark (the official
state mark for silver purity).
This is an early SCARCE example of the medal.
The Croatian State Mint produced mainly just the
Golden grade of the medal (in silver gilt) while
almost all the Small Silver Medals were produced
by Theodore Krivak of Varazdin.
