Ethiopia: WW2 Commemorative Medal for the
Ethiopian Patriots who Resisted the Italian
Invasion and Occupation, 1935 1941.
The medal was established in 1978 by
Mengistu Haile Mariam, leader of Ethiopia
during the Derg era (in office: 1977-1991).
It was designed by Air Force Colonel Tibebe
Desta, a noted Ethiopian artist, medalist, coin
designer and imperial portrait painter, who
served during both the Imperial and the Derg
era.
The medal was awarded to the surviving
veterans of the Ethiopian Resistance
(Arbegnoch) who fought against the Italian
Occupation (1935-1941) and assisted the
Allied East African campaign (also known as
the Abyssinian Campaign) between Jun. 1940
and Nov. 1941, that forced the Italian forces in
the region to surrender following the Battle of
Gondar in Nov. 1941.
The medal is rare.
