Ethiopia: Silver Commemorative Medal for
Service in the Korean War, 1950- 1953.
Maker marked by Sporrong, Sweden.
Ethiopia was one of the first Nations that
answered the UN plea for military assistance
in Korea.
They participated with an Infantry Battalion
(the "Kagnew" (Conqueror) Battalion) with
volunteers selected from the Imperial Guard -
the bodyguard of Emperor Haile Sellasie.
The 1st Kegnew Battalion arrived in Korea in
1951 and by the end of the War a total of 3
"Kagnew Battalions" (1st, 2nd & 3rd Kagnew
Battalions) had been deployed in annual
rotation.
The Kagnew Battalion served with the US 7th
Infantry Division, earned the respect of both
friends and foes, suffering 121 dead and 536
wounded during the course of the conflict.
The Ethiopians were awarded nine Silver Star
Medals and dozens of Bronze Star Medals by
the US.
The Battalion also received a US Presidential
Citation.
It is interesting that the Kagnew Battalions
engaged in combat 238 times and won every
encounter, they never left their dead behind
and none of their men was ever captured as
Prisoner of War.
In total 3518 Ethiopian combat personnel
served during the War so the medal is rarely
seen.
