FINLAND: WW2 Central Karelian Isthmus
Commemorative Cross for the Winter War
against the Soviet Union (1939-1940).
Obverse: A snowflake central medallion
imposed upon the crossed swords of Karelia.
On the reverse:"Keski Kannas" (Central
Ishtmus), 1939 - 1940.
The Cross was awarded to all troops of the
1st and 11th (later it was renamed to 2nd)
Divisions for the defense of Karelia during
the Winter War against the USSR.
The War began with the Soviet invasion of
Finland on 30 Nov. 1939 and ended with the
Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 Mar. 1940.
Finland ceded territory representing 11% of
its land area and 30% of its economy to the
Soviet Union.
Soviet losses were heavy, and the country's
international reputation suffered.
The League of Nations deemed the attack
illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from
the League on 14 Dec. 1939.
This is the example for the 2nd Division.
The Cross is scarce.
