FINLAND: WW2 Commemorative Medal for
the Winter War against the Soviet Union
(1939-1940).
With "Lappi" (Lapland) clasp.
On the obverse a Finnish soldier in winter
uniform encircled by the coat of arms of the
provinces of Finland.
On the reverse:"KUNNIA ISÄNMAA" (Honor,
Fatherland)
The medal was established in 1940 and was
awarded to the participants of the Winter War
against the USSR.
The War began with the Soviet invasion of
Finland on 30 Nov. 1939 and ended with the
Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 Mar. 1940.
Finland ceded territory representing 11% of
its land area and 30% of its economy to the
Soviet Union.
Soviet losses were heavy, and the country's
international reputation suffered.
The League of Nations deemed the attack
illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from
the League on 14 Dec. 1939.
The "Lappi" clasp was awarded for front line
service in Lapland (Battles of Salla & Petsamo).
The clasp is scarce as it was awarded only to
the 3500 men of the Lapland Group of Major
General Kurt Martti Wallenius.
