FRANCE: Silver Veteran Medal for the 1870 -1871
Franco - Prussian War. With the "1870-1871" bar and
a rare "Vice President" clasp on the ribbon.
The clasp "Vice President" shows that the recipient
held the respective office within the structure of the
Veteran's Assosiation.

The medal was issued by the French National Society
of Retirees (established in 1893 by Commandant
Charet).
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was fought between
the 2nd French Empire and the German states led by
the Kingdom of Prussia.
After a series of German victories (Battle of Sedan,
Siege of Metz), Emperor Napoleon III was captured,
the 3rd French Republic was declared, the French
Army was decisively defeated and the Germans laid
siege on Paris and later captured the city.
