FRANCE: National Order of the Legion of Honor,
Knight's Cross of the 3rd French Republic, with its
diploma of issue to a Captain of the 12th Artillery
Regiment.
The diploma is dated 1879 (the year that France
issued the awards for the Franco Prussian War
of 1870 - 71) and is signed by President Jules
Grevy and General Vinoy.
Due to the French defeat in the Franco - Prussian
War of 1870, the fall of Emperor Napoleon III and
the establishment of the 3rd Republic in 1870 the
awards for the Franco Prussian War were delayed
and were very limited.
The Order was established by Napoleon
Bonaparte in 1802 and is awarded to both French
and foreign citizens for outstanding military or
civil services to France.
The Order of Honor represents the highest
national decoration of France.
