France: National Defense Medal, Bronze grade,
with 3 clasps: "Engineers", "Nageurs de Combat"
(Navy Seals) and "Mururoa - Hao".
Given the clasps, it is safe to assess that the medal
belonged to a member of the French Special Forces
who served on the French nuclear testing site on the
Mururoa atol in the French Polynesia, most likely in
the 70's - 80s as the tests on the atol were conducted
between 1966 - 1996.
The National Defense Medal was created in 1982,
in 3 grades (Bronze, Silver, Gold).
It rewards particularly honorable service rendered
by military personnel for their participation in
operational activities.
The qualification for the award of the medal is
linked to both time service criteria as well as to
personal achievements that are recorded as
points.
For the bronze class, the minimum requirements
are 1 year of service and 90 personal points.
Civilians can also qualify for the award under
certain circumstances (killed or injured in the
line of duty or for honorable services particularly
important to the defense of France)
