FRANCE: Silver Commemorative Medal for
the "Tonkin, China, Annam Campaign" (1883-
1886), where the French fought against the
Vietnamese and Chinese armies in order to
occupy Tonkin (in northern Vietnam).
The French expeditionary troops were
supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin
Flotilla.
This is the medal that had been awarded to
the colonial Land Forces (Army) and differs
from the one given to the crews of the French
Flotilla as it doesn't include, on its reverse
side, the engagement of Cau - Giai (a major
French defeat in which the French Flotilla
Commander, Henri Riviere, was killed).
