FRANCE: Commemorative medal for the 50th
Anniversary of the WW1 Armistice in 1918.
The medal was issued in 1968 and each
French Department issued each own version.
This example comes from the department of
Bas-Rhin, (Lower Rhin), one of the two
departments of the traditional Alsace region.
The signing of the WW1 armistice which took
place, on 11 Nov. 1918, in the railway carriage
(carriage N. 24190) of Marshal Foch at the
Forest of Compiègne, about 37 miles (60 km)
North of Paris.
Notable is that Hitler demanded that the
capitulation of France, in 1940, to be signed
in the same carriage at the same place.
A rarely seen commemorative medal.
