before the 1st Battle of the Marne (Sep. 1914).

Marshal Joseph Joffre served as Commander 
in Chief of the French forces on the Western 
Front from the start of WW1 until the end of 
1916. Under his command, the retreating allied 
armies regrouped and managed to defeat the 
Germans at the strategically decisive 1st Battle 
of the Marne.
