The Order was established in 1808 by Emperor 
Napoleon Bonaparte and it was initially aimed to 
honor teachers or professors. 
In 1866, the scope of the award was widened to 
include significant contributions to the French 
national education and culture or/and to the 
international expansion of the French culture.
