FRANCE: Red Cross SBM Medal, version of the
WW1 period 1914 - 1918, with golden (gilt) palms
for minimum 3 years of service as a nurse, during
war time - the highest grade of the palms.
The acronym SBM stands for Association for
Aiding the Wounded Military.
The French Association (Society) for Aiding the
Wounded Military was established in 1864,
following the signing of the Geneva Convention
1 year earlier (1863).
The Association operated on voluntary basis
and offered its services both in France and in
the French Colonies overseas.
In 1940 the the French Association for Aiding the
Wounded, the Union of the Women of France and
the Association of French Ladies were merged to
officially establish the French Red Cross.
