FRANCE: WW1 Verdun Commemorative
Medal, with the clasp "Verdun" in its box of
issue.
This is the rare version of the Vernier model
with ball suspender instead of "key ring".
The medal comes with its diploma of issue to
a Warrant Officer of the 2nd Mixed Reg. of
Zuaves and (Algerian) Skirmishers - a Light
Infantry Regiment.
Note that the Zuaves and the Algerian
Skirmishers were among the most decorated
units of the French Army.
The Verdun medals were unofficial awards,
by the municipality of Verdun, to military
personnel who participated in the February
1916 battle of the Verdun fort.
The medal was designed by Seraphin Emile
Vernier, with the name of the medalist
engraved on it together with the motto "on
ne passe pas" (you will not pass), and the
date "21 Fevrier 1916" on the reverse side.
This is the rarest version of the "Vernier
type" of the medal.
The diplomas to Warrant Officers are rare.
