FRANCE: WW2 Colonial medal with 2 clasps:
"Madagascar" and "Afrique Francaise Libre"
(Free French Africa).
Rare unofficial, non silver and unmarked
version of the medal, 22 mm in diameter
(smaller in diameter than the official type -
but still a full size medal)with ball suspender.
The "Madagascar" clasp was issued for the
defense of Madagascar by the Vichy forces
during the Allied landing on the island
(Operation Ironclad).
The "Free French Africa" clasp was awarded
to the Free French Forces in African Colonies
that sided with General de Gaulle in order to
continue the struggle against Nazi Germany
and the Axis forces and refused allegiance to
the Government of Vichy.
The Colonial medal was established in 1893
and was awarded to military personnel who
operated in French protectorates and
colonies.
In total there are established 52 official and
63 unofficial bars for the colonial medal.
The award was replaced in 1962 by the
Overseas Medal.
