FRANCE: WW2 Commemorative medal, with 5
clasps: "Allemagne" (Germany), "Liberation",
"Italie" (Italy), "Afrique" (Africa) and "Norvege"
(Norway).
The clasps were awarded as follows:
- The clasp "Allemagne" (Germany) was issued
for the operations of the period 14 Sep. 1944 - 8
May 1945.
- The clasp "Liberation": for the operations in
Metropolitan France and the island of Corsica
during the period 25 June 1940 - 8 May 1945.
- The clasp "Italie" (Italy) was issued for the
operations in Italy during the period Sep. 1943 -
Apr. 1945.
The clasp was abolished in 1953 due to the
institution of the respective medal for the Italian
Campaign.
- The clasp "Afrique" (Africa) was issued for
operations between 25 Jun. 1940 and 13 May 1943.
- The clasp "Norvege" (Norway) was issued for
participation in the Battle of Norway (19 Apr.
1940 and 08 Jun. 1940).
The French Forces sent to Norway (Alpine Hunter
Division, Foreign Legion Brigade,
Artillery Units and Navy Vessels) are estimated to
15000 men only, so the clasp is scarce.
The medal was instituted in 1946 and was
awarded to the members of the French Armed
Forces who participated in the War between 3
Sept. 1939 and 8 May 1945.
Signed by F. Josse and G. Simon, hallmarked
bronze by the Paris Mint.
