FRANCE: WW2 Commemorative Military Medal
issued by the 10e Arrondissement (the 10th
administrative subdivision) of Paris, to the
Combatants, members of the Resistance and
of the Free French Forces, who took part in the
battle for the Liberation of Paris, on 19 Aug. 1944.
In bronze, hallmarked and maker marked by the
Paris Mint.
The Liberation of Paris (also known as the Battle
for Paris) took place during the period 19-25 Aug.
1944. The battle was fought mainly between the
French Resistance and forces of the German
Garrison of Paris who tried to inflict maximum
damage to the city according to Hitler's orders.
Nearly 1000 members of the French Resistance
lost their lives while trying to prevent the Germans
to leave the city and leave ruins behind them.
On 24 Aug. 1944, vanguards of the 2nd French
Armored Division (under the command of General
Leclerc), despite the direct orders of the US
Corps Commander, Major General Leonard T.
Gerow, entered Paris.
The German forces, under General Von Choltitz
surrendered the next day (25 Aug. 1944).
An extremely rare unofficial resistance award.
