FRANCE: National Order of the Legion of Honor,
Knight's Cross of the 3rd French Republic, with
its diploma of issue.
A posthumous award to a Captain of the 23rd
Colonial Infantry Regiment, who was killed in
action (Mort pour la France).
The diploma is dated 1945 and was signed after
the liberation of France, based on a 1943 decree.
Signed by General Dassault, without the signature
of the French President (as France since 1944 had
a Provisional Government under the Commander
of the Free French, Brigadier General de Gaulle -
as Prime Minister, until his resignation in 1946).
The Order was established by Napoleon
Bonaparte in 1802 and is awarded to both French
and foreign citizens for outstanding military or
civil services to France.
The Order of Honor represents the highest
national decoration of France.
