FRANCE: WW2 Commemorative Medal for the Siege
and the Liberation of Dunkirk (16 Sep. 1944 - 09 May
1945).
The medal was instituted in 1974 by the Coordinating
Committee of Patriotic Societies of the Dunkirk Region.
The decoration was awarded to the French Forces
(members of the 33rd, 51st, 67th, 110th Infantry
Regiments and 15th Artillery Regiment), members of
the French Resistance (FFI) and members of the 1st
Czech Armored Brigade who participated in the Siege
and the Liberation of the Pocket of Dunkirk.
The medal is scarce because it was awarded only to
still living at the time recipients, it had to be claimed
by them, while the majority of the Czech troops were
unable to receive the medal due to the Cold War being
at its peak at the time.
