IMPERIAL GERMANY: Colonial Commemorative
medal, for the Combatants of the Colonial
Protection Force - Kaiser Wilhelm II, 1912.
Rare example in bronze gilt.
On the obverse: The portrait or Kaiser Wilhelm II
On the reverse: "DEN TAPFEREN STREITERN
FUR DEUTSCHLANDS EHRE" (To the Brave
Combatants of Germany's Honor).
The medal was instituted in 1912 to be awarded to
combatants of the German Colonial Protection
Force, or to combatants abroad who got involved
in armed conflicts while protecting Germans or
the German interests. In addition to the Protection
Force, the crews of the Imperial Navy Corvettes
Furst Bismarck and Olga who fought in the
Cameroon campaign were also eligible for the
Medal.
The medal was awarded only whenever no other
commemorative medal was instituted for the
specific campaign - so those who had received
the German South West Africa Medal (1904-1908),
or the China Campaign medal (1900-1901) were
not eligible for the award.
As a consequence the medal is quite rare.450
