Imperial Germany - Brunswick: Ernst August 's
Cross of Military Merit 2nd Class, EA2.
With the diploma of issue to Heinrich Ehlers,
who served with the 79th Infantry Regiment
"von Voigts-Rhetz" (3rd Reg. of Hanover)/
6th Company of the 20th Infantry Division.
The Cross was instituted by Duke Ernst August
in 1914, initially in a single class (the 2nd class
like this example). It was awarded regardless
of the rank of the recipient, for merit in action.
In 1918 the Cross was amended with the
addition of the 1st Class in a form similar to
the Prussian Iron Cross 1st Class.
The up to 1918 single class cross became
the 2nd Class of the award.
The Cross is rare in both classes (especially
in the 1st Class) as the Duchy had at the
time less than 500.000 inhabitants.
