Imperial Germany - Brunswick: WW1 Cross of
Merit for Women and Young Women.
Obverse: The year 1914
Obverse and reverse: The monograms: "EA" (for
Duke Ernst August) & "VL" for Duchess Viktoria
Luise of Brunswick.
Reverse: "Fur Aufopfernde Dienste Im Kriege"
(For Self-Sacrificing Services in War).
The Cross was instituted by Duke Ernst August in
Sep. 1917, in a single class.
It was awarded exclusively to women and young
women for outstanding wartime services, self-
sacrificing charitable and humanitarian activities
as well as actions with positive impact to the war
effort.
The award was not returnable after the death of
the recipient and it was suppressed in Nov. 1918.
The Cross is rare not only because of the fact
that the Duchy had at the time less than 500.000
inhabitants, but also because it was awarded for
only 14 months.
