Imperial Germany: Patriotic cap badge presenting
the sinking of HMS Aboukir.
Inscribed "Gott Strafe England" (God punish
England) and "Gott mit Uns" (God be with us).
Featuring the Iron Cross.
The badge celebrates the incident of 22 Sep. 1914,
where the Submarine U-9 under the command of
Kapitanleutnant (Commander) Weddigen, on 22
Sep. 1914, while patrolling in the region of the
southern North Sea intercepted 3 warships of the
7th Cruiser Squadron. Weddigen fired off all 6 of
his torpedoes, reloaded while submerged and in
less than 60 mins sank the British armored
cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS
Cressy.
62 officers and 1397 men were killed, only 837
survived.
These badges were issued for fund raising
purposes in order to support the war effort.
The badge is scarce.
