GERMANY-Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine):
Set of 2 WW1 medals mounted on large bar.
From left to right:
- Iron Cross 2nd Class. Despite of the fact that
the maker's mark is not visible, this is a typical
example of maker "KO" (Imperial Mint).
- WW1 "Marine Cross" (or "Flanders Cross"),
with 4 clasps (YSER, YPRES, SOMME,
DURCHBRUCHSSCHLACT ("Breakthrough"
clasp, for the Eastern Front Gorlice-Tarnow
offensive in 1915) for participation in the
respective battles.
The Flanders Cross was instituted in 1921 as
an unofficial veterans award.
Just like the majority of the Veteran awards of
the Weimar Republic, only the diploma was
actually issued.
The Cross and the respective clasps had to
be purchased privately by the recipients.
Only roughly 30.000 Crosses were authorized.
