Imperial Germany - Hamburg: WW1 German Field
Decoration of Honor, 1914 - 1918, chest star badge.
In its scarce box of issue.
Both the badge & the box are marked "Deutsches
Feld-Ehrenzeichen, Hamburg 3" and "Ges. Gesch"
(Protected Design), on the reverse and on the lid
respectively.
The German Field Decoration of Honor was an
unofficial award of the respective Hamburg based
Veteran Association for participation in the Great
War.
It was issued during the years 1923 - 1934 (era
of the Weimar Republic).
Just like the majority of the awards of the Weimar
Republic period, only the numbered diploma was
actually issued (160.285 such certificates were
issued in total - 120.000 of those during the years
1933-1934).
The badge was designed by M.Fleck & Sohn of
Hamburg, but it was actually manufactured by
several other medal makers as well.
The award had to be purchased by the veterans
themselves and just like the majority of the
Weimar Republic awards, it was banned by the
Nazi regime in 1935.
This is the rare "Hamburg 3" type of the badge.
The common type reads "Hamburg 11".
