The Cross was instituted in 1914 by Grand 
Duke Friedrich August, in 2 classes.
It was  awarded  to recognize outstanding 
services during front line service. 
This is the issued, iron made (magnetic) 
version of the medal. 
The award was suppressed in 1918 and only 
27.000 2nd Class Crosses were awarded in 
total.
