Imperial Germany – Kingdom of Prussia: Royal
Order of the Red Eagle 4th class.
Example of the period 1861 - 1918.
The Order was instituted in 1734 as the "Order
of Red Eagle of Brandenburg of the Principality
of Brandenburg-Ansbach".
In 1777 it was renamed as the Order of the Red
Eagle and following the annexation of the
Principalities by Prussia the Order became the
2nd Premier award of the Kingdom.
It was awarded for bravery in combat and/or
excellence in military leadership.
The Order was very rarely awarded.
This version of the Order (version of 1861 - 1918)
was awarded only 113 times during WW1 - with
the Red Baron (Manfred von Richthofen) being
one of the most famous recipients.
