Imperial Germany – Kingdom of Saxony: Order of
Merit - Silver Merit Cross, 2nd Model, 2nd Type
(1911 - 1918)
The Order of Merit was instituted in 1815 as Order
of Civil Merit, in initially 3 classes.
In 1849 the Order was renamed to Order of Merit
and expanded first to 5 classes and in 1876 to 6
Classes.
Since 1866 the Order was also awarded for War
Merit (with Swords).
The Silver Merit Cross was awarded for Civil Merit.
This is a typical example by the Royal Mint (the
letter "V" is used instead of the letter "U") - 2nd
Model, 2nd Type, awarded from 1911 to 1918.
A very rare medal as only 2300 Silver Crosses
were ever awarded.
