Imperial Germany: "The Iron Hindenburg"
Patriotic Commemorative Medal.
On the obverse: The "Iron Hindenburg" Statue,
dated 1915.
On the reverse: "Dem Eisenrnes Hindenburg -
Das Deutsche Volk" (To the Iron Hindenburg -
The German People)
The medal was introduced in 1915, to reward
those who contributed in "The Iron
Hindenburg" war relief fundraising campaign.
Centerpiece of the campaign was the huge
wooden statue of Field-Marshal Paul von
Hindenburg, erected in Berlin.
The public was invited to pay for a nail to
hammer into the statue (100DM for a golden,
5DM for a silvered and 1DM for an iron nail).
The goal was to fully cover the statue in nails.
The medal, measures 18mm in diameter, and
was manufactured in iron, zinc or aluminum,
by "Münz-Präge Anstalt Ludwig Christian
Lauer" firm of Nuremberg.
This is the rarest type of the medal in iron.
